This series fuses close observation of insect forms with mathematical concepts from chaos theory, particularly the Lorenz attractor—a system that reveals how small changes create unpredictable, oscillating patterns. Dragonflies, with their compound eyes and delicate antennae, become whimsical guardians hovering between order and chaos, their bodies mapping invisible trajectories through space.
Linear marks build structure through repetition and rhythm, echoing both the segmented anatomy of insects and the looping paths of chaotic systems. These beings are simultaneously precise and mysterious. Their oscillating forms suggest movement caught mid-flight, antennae tuned to frequencies we cannot hear, eyes reflecting fractured worlds.
Like the Lorenz attractor itself, they occupy a space between predictability and surprise, where pattern and randomness dance together. The dragonfly’s compound eye sees multiple realities simultaneously—a perfect metaphor for how chaos theory reveals order within apparent disorder.
The Lorenz attractor describes how deterministic systems can produce wildly unpredictable behavior—the famous “butterfly effect” where tiny initial differences lead to vastly different outcomes. Insect forms, with their segmented bodies and geometric wing patterns, embody this tension perfectly: rigid structure producing fluid, unpredictable movement.
Working with acrylic markers on black cardboard and acrylic on canvas, I exploit the deep, matte negative space as an active collaborator. The black isn’t emptiness but a field—the void from which these creatures emerge and into which they might dissolve.
The unpainted space holds as much weight as the drawn—what remains untouched allows the viewer’s eye to complete the motion, to sense the flutter and hum beyond the frame. This is negative space as mathematical field, as the dark matter that holds visible forms in relationship.
These creatures don’t sit static on the page. They vibrate at the edge of becoming, caught in the perpetual oscillation that defines both insect flight and chaotic systems—never quite settling, never quite departing.
